Job Brief
As a Harbor Tug Captain, you will command and supervise the operations of tugboats and other water vessels, ensuring safe and efficient navigation within port areas. This role requires extensive experience in maritime operations, strong leadership abilities, and a valid U.S. Coast Guard license. You will be responsible for coordinating vessel movements, managing crew activities, and maintaining compliance with safety regulations, while demonstrating expert knowledge of harbor navigation and tugboat handling.
Responsibilities
- Command and operate harbor tugboats, ferryboats, and other water vessels to assist in docking, undocking, and maneuvering ships within the port.
- Supervise crew members, assigning tasks and ensuring adherence to safety protocols and operational procedures.
- Communicate effectively with port authorities and vessel operators to coordinate safe and efficient harbor operations.
- Conduct pre-voyage inspections of vessels, ensuring all equipment is functional and safety gear is readily available.
- Monitor weather conditions, tides, and currents to make informed decisions on navigation and operations.
- Maintain accurate records of vessel operations, logs, and compliance with regulatory requirements.
- Respond to emergency situations promptly, implementing appropriate safety and rescue measures as needed.
- Provide training and mentorship to crew members on best practices in tugboat operations and safety procedures.
Requirements
- Valid U.S. Coast Guard license for operating tugboats and water vessels.
- Proven experience as a Tug Captain or in a similar maritime leadership role.
- Strong knowledge of marine navigation, harbor regulations, and vessel safety practices.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively lead a diverse crew.
- Ability to make quick decisions and maintain composure in high-pressure situations.
- Proficiency in using navigational equipment and electronic chart systems.
- Familiarity with emergency response protocols and safety training techniques.
- Physical fitness and stamina to perform demanding tasks in challenging maritime environments.
