Job Brief
The Director of Civil Defense plays a critical role in planning and directing disaster response and crisis management activities. This position requires expertise in disaster preparedness training and the development of emergency plans for various scenarios including natural disasters, wartime crises, and technological emergencies. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in emergency management, strong leadership skills, and the ability to coordinate with multiple stakeholders to ensure community safety and resilience.
Responsibilities
- Develop and implement comprehensive disaster response strategies and emergency preparedness plans.
- Lead training programs for staff and community members on disaster preparedness and crisis management.
- Coordinate with local, state, and federal agencies to ensure effective disaster response operations.
- Evaluate and improve existing emergency plans based on best practices and lessons learned from previous incidents.
- Conduct risk assessments to identify potential hazards and vulnerabilities within the community.
- Manage a team of emergency management professionals, providing guidance and support as needed.
- Oversee communication strategies during emergencies to inform and guide the public.
- Stay informed about emerging threats and trends in disaster management and civil defense.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Emergency Management, Public Safety, or related field; Master’s degree preferred.
- Proven experience in disaster response, crisis management, or emergency management roles.
- Strong knowledge of federal, state, and local emergency management regulations and policies.
- Certification in emergency management (e.g., Certified Emergency Manager – CEM) is highly desirable.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work under pressure and make critical decisions in high-stress situations.
- Proficient in emergency management software and technology.
- Experience in community engagement and public education initiatives.
