Job Brief
As a Cow Tender, you will play a vital role in the care and management of livestock, specifically cattle and other farm animals. Your primary responsibilities will include feeding, watering, herding, and managing the health of animals to ensure optimal production of meat, milk, and other animal products. The ideal candidate should possess hands-on experience in animal husbandry, a passion for livestock care, and strong observational skills to detect signs of illness or distress in animals.
Responsibilities
- Feed and water livestock, ensuring a balanced diet to promote health and productivity.
- Herd and manage grazing patterns for cattle and other farm animals.
- Assist with milking operations, ensuring hygiene and proper techniques are followed.
- Monitor animal health, identifying signs of disease or injury for timely intervention.
- Maintain accurate records of livestock health, feeding schedules, and breeding activities.
- Administer medications, vaccinations, and insecticides as needed to maintain animal welfare.
- Assist in birthing processes, providing support and care to newborn animals.
- Clean and maintain animal housing areas to ensure a safe and healthy environment.
- Shear wool from sheep and collect eggs in hatcheries, if applicable.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent; additional veterinary or animal science education preferred.
- Hands-on experience in animal husbandry or farm management.
- Strong knowledge of livestock care practices and animal health issues.
- Ability to operate farm machinery and equipment safely.
- Physical stamina and the ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
- Strong communication skills for effective teamwork and reporting.
- Basic record-keeping skills to document animal health and feeding schedules.
- Willingness to work flexible hours, including weekends and holidays, as required.
