Job Brief
We are seeking a detail-oriented Veneer Grader to assess the quality and marketability of logs and pulpwood in sorting yards, millponds, and log decks. The ideal candidate will possess strong analytical skills and a keen eye for detail, with a solid background in timber grading and inspection. This role requires the ability to accurately measure logs, identify defects, and estimate the value of wood products to ensure optimal processing and sales.
Responsibilities
- Grade logs and pulpwood for quality and marketability based on industry standards.
- Inspect logs for defects, including knots, cracks, and other imperfections.
- Measure logs to determine volume and assess overall value.
- Maintain accurate records of grading assessments and findings.
- Collaborate with production and purchasing teams to optimize inventory management.
- Utilize grading tools and technology to enhance assessment accuracy.
- Stay updated on industry trends and grading techniques to improve evaluation processes.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent; additional training in forestry or wood science preferred.
- Proven experience in timber grading or a related field.
- Strong understanding of logging and lumber processing operations.
- Proficiency in measuring tools and grading equipment.
- Excellent attention to detail and analytical skills.
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Effective communication skills for collaborating with team members.
- Basic computer skills for record-keeping and reporting.
