Job Brief
The Veterinarian Assistant plays a vital role in providing care and support to pets and nonfarm animals in veterinary hospitals, clinics, and laboratories. This position requires hands-on experience in animal care, including feeding, examining for signs of illness or injury, and assisting with routine postoperative care. Ideal candidates possess strong observational skills, attention to detail, and a passion for animal welfare, alongside the ability to work collaboratively with veterinarians and veterinary technicians.
Responsibilities
- Feed, water, and monitor animals for signs of illness, disease, or injury.
- Assist veterinarians during examinations and procedures to ensure optimal animal care.
- Clean and disinfect cages, kennels, and work areas to maintain a safe environment.
- Sterilize surgical instruments and laboratory equipment according to established protocols.
- Provide routine postoperative care, including administering medications orally or topically.
- Prepare and send samples for laboratory examination under supervision.
- Maintain accurate records of animal health and treatments administered.
- Educate pet owners on proper animal care and health maintenance practices.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent; additional veterinary assistant training preferred.
- Experience in a veterinary setting is highly advantageous.
- Knowledge of animal care procedures and veterinary terminology.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills for effective interaction with clients and team members.
- Ability to lift and handle animals safely and compassionately.
- Basic computer skills for record-keeping and scheduling.
- Certification as a Veterinary Assistant (CVA) is a plus.
- Willingness to work flexible hours, including weekends and holidays.
