Job Brief

The Track Repair Worker is responsible for laying, repairing, and maintaining track for standard or narrow-gauge railroad equipment utilized in regular railroad service, as well as in plant yards, quarries, sand and gravel pits, and mines. This role requires a strong understanding of railroad maintenance practices, proficiency in operating ballast cleaning machines and railroad bed tamping machines, and a commitment to safety in a dynamic work environment. Candidates should possess relevant experience in rail maintenance and demonstrate excellent problem-solving skills.

Responsibilities

  • Lay, repair, and maintain railroad tracks and associated infrastructure.
  • Operate ballast cleaning machines to ensure optimal track stability.
  • Utilize railroad bed tamping machines to compact track beds effectively.
  • Inspect tracks for defects and initiate necessary repairs to ensure safe operations.
  • Coordinate with team members to perform maintenance tasks efficiently.
  • Adhere to safety protocols and regulations during all maintenance activities.
  • Document maintenance work and report on track conditions as needed.
  • Assist in the installation of new track systems as required.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent; vocational training in railroad maintenance is a plus.
  • Proven experience as a Track Repair Worker or similar role in the railroad industry.
  • Familiarity with operating ballast cleaning and tamping machinery.
  • Strong understanding of railroad safety practices and regulations.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and engineering specifications.
  • Excellent physical stamina and ability to work in various weather conditions.
  • Effective communication skills and ability to work collaboratively in a team.
  • Valid driver’s license may be required; certification for operating heavy machinery is an advantage.
