Job Brief
As a Goat Herder, you will play a vital role in the management and care of goats and other livestock on farms, ranches, or open ranges. This position requires hands-on experience in animal husbandry, including feeding, herding, and maintaining the health of the animals. Ideal candidates possess strong observational skills and a passion for animal care, ensuring the well-being of livestock while also managing tasks related to breeding, milking, and record-keeping.
Responsibilities
- Feed and water goats and other livestock regularly to ensure their nutritional needs are met.
- Herd and graze animals in designated areas while monitoring their behavior for any signs of distress or illness.
- Assist in the birthing process and provide care for newborn animals.
- Administer medications, vaccinations, and insecticides as required to maintain animal health.
- Maintain records of animal health, breeding, and productivity for effective management.
- Inspect animals for signs of disease, injury, or abnormalities, and take appropriate action.
- Clean and maintain animal housing areas to ensure a safe and healthy environment.
- Perform routine tasks such as milking, shearing, and collecting eggs as necessary.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent; relevant experience in animal husbandry preferred.
- Strong knowledge of livestock care, particularly goats, and understanding of animal behavior.
- Ability to perform physical tasks, including lifting and moving animals.
- Experience with basic veterinary care and administering medications.
- Excellent observational skills to monitor the health and well-being of animals.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to operate farm equipment safely.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work independently or as part of a team.
