Job Brief
The Engine Hostler is responsible for operating switching locomotives or dinkey engines within railroad yards, industrial plants, quarries, and construction sites. This role requires a skilled operator to safely maneuver locomotives for loading and unloading operations, ensuring efficient movement of freight and materials. Candidates should possess a thorough understanding of railway operations, safety protocols, and effective communication skills. Experience in a similar role is preferred, along with a strong commitment to safety and adherence to industry regulations.
Responsibilities
- Operate switching locomotives and dinkey engines to facilitate the movement of railcars within designated areas.
- Perform pre-operational checks and routine maintenance on locomotives to ensure safe and efficient performance.
- Coordinate with yardmasters and other team members to schedule and execute switching operations effectively.
- Monitor track conditions and signaling systems to maintain safety during locomotive operations.
- Document daily operations, maintenance performed, and any incidents in compliance with regulatory standards.
- Adhere to all safety protocols, regulatory guidelines, and company policies to ensure a secure work environment.
- Assist in training new staff on locomotive operations and safety procedures as needed.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent; additional technical training in locomotive operation preferred.
- Valid locomotive engineer’s license or certification in accordance with industry standards.
- Proven experience operating locomotives or heavy machinery in a rail yard or industrial setting.
- Strong understanding of railroad signal systems, track layout, and safety regulations.
- Ability to work flexible hours, including weekends and holidays, as required by operational demands.
- Excellent communication skills and ability to work collaboratively with a diverse team.
- Physical stamina and ability to work in various weather conditions while performing manual tasks.
