Job Brief

The Conservation Science Officer plays a crucial role in managing, improving, and protecting natural resources while ensuring sustainable practices that do not harm the environment. This position requires expertise in soil surveys, erosion control, and sustainable land management techniques. Ideal candidates will have a background in environmental science or a related field, excellent communication skills, and experience in advising agricultural stakeholders on best practices for soil and water conservation.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct soil surveys to assess and monitor soil health and conditions.
  • Develop and implement plans to eliminate soil erosion and protect rangelands.
  • Advise farmers, agricultural managers, and ranchers on sustainable practices such as crop rotation, contour plowing, and terracing.
  • Provide guidance on the optimal selection of livestock and forage plants suited to specific ranges.
  • Design and recommend improvements for farms and rangelands, including fencing and reservoirs for stock watering.
  • Collaborate with governmental and environmental organizations to promote conservation initiatives.
  • Conduct educational workshops and training sessions for stakeholders on conservation practices.
  • Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of conservation programs and make recommendations for improvements.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Conservation Biology, Agriculture, or a related field.
  • Proven experience in soil conservation, land management, or related environmental work.
  • Strong knowledge of sustainable agricultural practices and natural resource management.
  • Excellent analytical skills with the ability to assess environmental data.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills for stakeholder engagement.
  • Proficiency in using GIS and other relevant software for environmental analysis.
  • Certification in soil conservation or related fields is a plus.
  • Willingness to work outdoors and travel to various sites as required.
