Job Brief

As a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist, you will plan, direct, and coordinate medically-approved recreation programs aimed at enhancing the quality of life for patients in hospitals, nursing homes, and other healthcare settings. You will assess individual patient needs, recommend appropriate recreational activities, and facilitate engaging programs that include sports, social activities, crafts, and trips. The ideal candidate will possess strong interpersonal skills, creativity, and the ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement therapeutic recreation programs tailored to patients’ physical, emotional, and social needs.
  • Assess patients’ conditions and recommend suitable recreational activities to promote health and well-being.
  • Coordinate and supervise recreational activities, ensuring safety and accessibility for all participants.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of patient progress and participation in activities.
  • Collaborate with healthcare professionals to integrate recreational activities into overall treatment plans.
  • Educate patients and families about the benefits of recreational therapy and available programs.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of recreational programs and make necessary adjustments to improve outcomes.
  • Participate in continuous professional development and stay updated on industry trends and best practices.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Therapeutic Recreation, Recreation Management, or a related field.
  • Certification as a Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) from the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification (NCTRC).
  • Experience working in healthcare settings, particularly with diverse patient populations.
  • Strong knowledge of therapeutic recreation principles, practices, and techniques.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage patients effectively.
  • Proficiency in planning and implementing a variety of recreational activities.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team environment.
