Job Brief
The Barge Loader is responsible for efficiently and safely loading and unloading chemicals and bulk solids, such as coal, sand, and grain, into and from tank cars, trucks, or ships using material moving equipment. This role requires attention to detail, adherence to safety protocols, and the ability to perform a variety of tasks related to the shipment of products. Candidates should possess a strong understanding of material handling procedures and equipment, as well as experience in gauging or sampling shipping tanks and testing for leaks.
Responsibilities
- Operate material moving equipment to load and unload bulk solids and chemicals efficiently.
- Monitor and ensure compliance with safety regulations during loading and unloading processes.
- Gauge and sample shipping tanks to ensure proper quantities and quality of materials.
- Test shipping tanks for leaks and report any issues to the appropriate personnel.
- Perform routine maintenance and inspections on loading and unloading equipment.
- Maintain accurate records of shipments, including quantities and types of materials handled.
- Collaborate with team members to coordinate loading and unloading schedules.
- Follow standard operating procedures to ensure the safe handling of hazardous materials.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent; additional certifications in material handling preferred.
- Proven experience as a Barge Loader or in a similar role within the logistics or shipping industry.
- Familiarity with material moving equipment, including cranes, forklifts, and conveyor systems.
- Strong understanding of safety regulations and best practices for handling chemicals and bulk materials.
- Excellent communication skills and ability to work effectively in a team environment.
- Ability to perform physical tasks, including lifting and moving heavy materials.
- Basic mechanical aptitude for equipment maintenance and troubleshooting.
