Job Brief
The Hazardous Waste Handler is responsible for the safe identification, removal, packing, transport, and disposal of hazardous materials, including asbestos, lead-based paint, waste oil, fuel, transmission fluid, and contaminated soil. This role requires specialized training and certification in hazardous materials handling, along with the ability to operate earth-moving equipment or trucks. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of safety regulations and best practices in hazardous waste management, ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal environmental laws.
Responsibilities
- Identify hazardous materials on job sites and assess associated risks.
- Safely remove, pack, and transport hazardous waste to designated disposal facilities.
- Ensure compliance with environmental regulations and safety standards during waste handling and disposal.
- Operate earth-moving equipment and trucks as necessary for waste removal.
- Maintain accurate records of hazardous materials handled and disposal methods used.
- Conduct regular inspections and maintenance of hazardous waste storage areas.
- Collaborate with environmental agencies and regulatory bodies during audits and inspections.
- Participate in ongoing training programs related to hazardous waste management and safety protocols.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent; additional education in environmental science or a related field is a plus.
- Certification in hazardous materials handling or confined space entry required.
- Proven experience in waste management, particularly with hazardous materials.
- Strong knowledge of local, state, and federal environmental regulations.
- Ability to operate heavy machinery and trucks safely.
- Excellent attention to detail and strong problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work in physically demanding environments and adhere to safety protocols.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a team.
