Job Brief
The Gerontological Nurse Practitioner (GNP) is a specialized healthcare professional responsible for diagnosing and treating acute, episodic, or chronic illnesses in older adults. Working independently or as part of a multidisciplinary healthcare team, the GNP focuses on health promotion, disease prevention, and overall wellness. This role requires advanced clinical skills, the ability to order and interpret diagnostic tests, and the authority to prescribe medications, ensuring comprehensive care for geriatric patients.
Responsibilities
- Conduct thorough assessments of patients to identify health issues and develop personalized care plans.
- Diagnose and manage acute and chronic medical conditions in older adults.
- Order, perform, and interpret diagnostic tests including lab work and imaging studies.
- Prescribe medications and manage pharmacotherapy for geriatric patients.
- Provide health education and counseling on disease prevention and health promotion.
- Collaborate with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to coordinate patient care.
- Document patient histories, treatment plans, and outcomes in electronic health records (EHR).
- Stay updated on best practices and advancements in gerontology and geriatric care.
Requirements
- Master’s degree in Nursing with a specialization in Gerontology or related field.
- Active Registered Nurse (RN) license and Nurse Practitioner (NP) certification.
- Certification as a Gerontological Nurse Practitioner (GNP) preferred.
- Proven experience in geriatric nursing or a related healthcare setting.
- Strong clinical assessment and diagnostic skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for patient interaction.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a healthcare team.
- Familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) systems and medical software.
