Job Brief
The Gaffer plays a critical role in the lighting department for film, television, and live productions. This position involves setting up, maintaining, and dismantling light fixtures, lighting control devices, and rigging equipment essential for achieving the desired visual effects. The ideal candidate will possess extensive experience with lighting equipment, a strong understanding of electrical systems, and proficiency in collaborating closely with the Director of Photography to create optimal lighting setups.
Responsibilities
- Set up and manage lighting equipment for photography, television, film, video, and live productions.
- Collaborate with the Director of Photography to determine lighting requirements and design effective lighting plans.
- Operate and focus light fixtures, ensuring precise positioning and intensity for various scenes.
- Attach color filters, diffusers, and other accessories to enhance lighting effects as needed.
- Maintain and troubleshoot lighting equipment to ensure reliable performance throughout production.
- Dismantle and properly store lighting gear post-production to prevent damage and ensure longevity.
- Supervise lighting crews during set-up and operation, providing guidance and training as necessary.
- Adhere to safety regulations and best practices while handling electrical equipment and rigging gear.
Requirements
- Proven experience as a Gaffer or in a similar lighting role within the film and television industry.
- In-depth knowledge of lighting equipment, techniques, and electrical systems.
- Strong technical skills in operating various lighting fixtures and control devices.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced environment and adapt to changing production needs.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Certification in electrical safety or related field is a plus.
- Physical stamina and the ability to lift heavy equipment as required.
