Job Brief

The Ferry Boat Captain is responsible for commanding and supervising the safe and efficient operations of ferry boats and other water vessels. This role requires extensive knowledge of navigational practices, maritime regulations, and safety protocols. The ideal candidate will possess strong leadership skills, the ability to manage crew operations, and a commitment to ensuring passenger safety and satisfaction. A valid U.S. Coast Guard license is mandatory, along with experience in marine navigation and vessel operations.

Responsibilities

  • Command and oversee the daily operations of ferry boats, ensuring compliance with safety regulations and maritime laws.
  • Perform navigational duties, including plotting courses, using navigational instruments, and maintaining communication with relevant authorities.
  • Supervise and train crew members, ensuring adherence to safety protocols and efficient operational practices.
  • Inspect the vessel prior to departure to ensure all safety equipment is functional and that the vessel is seaworthy.
  • Manage passenger boarding and disembarkation processes, providing information and assistance as needed.
  • Respond to emergencies, implementing evacuation procedures and coordinating with emergency services as required.
  • Maintain accurate logs of vessel operations, passenger counts, and incidents, reporting to relevant authorities.
  • Ensure compliance with environmental regulations and promote sustainable practices during vessel operations.

Requirements

  • Valid U.S. Coast Guard Captain’s license (Master or Operator of Uninspected Passenger Vessels).
  • Proven experience in marine navigation and vessel operations, preferably in a ferry or passenger transport setting.
  • Strong understanding of maritime regulations, safety standards, and emergency response procedures.
  • Excellent leadership and communication skills, with the ability to manage crew and passenger relations effectively.
  • Ability to work in various weather conditions and adapt to changing maritime environments.
  • First Aid and CPR certification, along with other relevant safety training.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to make quick decisions in emergency situations.
