Job Brief
As a Docking Pilot, you will command and supervise the operations of various water vessels, including tugboats and ferryboats, ensuring safe and efficient navigation during docking and undocking procedures. This role requires extensive knowledge of maritime regulations, navigational techniques, and vessel handling, along with a valid U.S. Coast Guard license. Ideal candidates will demonstrate strong leadership skills, exceptional situational awareness, and the ability to work under pressure in a dynamic marine environment.
Responsibilities
- Navigate and maneuver vessels during docking and undocking operations in compliance with safety regulations.
- Supervise and coordinate vessel movements, ensuring the safety of crew and cargo.
- Communicate effectively with vessel crews, port authorities, and other marine operators.
- Conduct risk assessments and implement safety protocols during all docking activities.
- Monitor weather and tidal conditions to make informed operational decisions.
- Maintain accurate records of docking operations and vessel movements.
- Provide training and guidance to junior crew members on best practices in vessel handling.
- Ensure compliance with federal and state maritime regulations and industry standards.
Requirements
- Valid U.S. Coast Guard license as a Docking Pilot or equivalent certification.
- Proven experience in piloting large vessels, preferably in a port or harbor environment.
- Strong understanding of maritime safety practices and navigation regulations.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for effective collaboration with diverse teams.
- Ability to remain calm and make critical decisions in high-pressure situations.
- Familiarity with modern navigation and communication equipment.
- Physical fitness and capability to perform duties in varying weather conditions.
- Knowledge of local waterways and port operations is an advantage.
