Job Brief
The Deck Hand plays a crucial role in the safe and efficient operation of marine vessels. Responsibilities
- Stand watch to monitor the vessel’s path, ensuring safe navigation and identifying potential hazards.
- Measure water depths and assist with steering the vessel as directed by the captain or pilot.
- Break out, rig, overhaul, and store all cargo-handling gear and rigging equipment.
- Perform routine maintenance to preserve the painted surface of the ship and maintain all line and ship equipment.
- Operate emergency equipment and follow safety protocols in case of emergencies or drills.
- Assist in loading and unloading cargo, ensuring proper securing and documentation.
- Maintain a clean and organized deck area, adhering to safety and environmental regulations.
- Collaborate with other crew members to ensure effective communication and teamwork.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent; maritime training or experience is a plus.
- Valid government-issued certification for maritime operations.
- Tankerman certification required for roles on liquid-carrying vessels.
- Strong understanding of safety protocols and emergency procedures in a maritime environment.
- Ability to operate deck machinery and equipment safely and effectively.
- Excellent physical stamina and ability to work in various weather conditions.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work well in a team.
- Willingness to work flexible hours and extended periods at sea.
