Job Brief
The Able Seaman is a crucial member of the crew responsible for maintaining the safety and operational efficiency of the vessel. This role involves standing watch, monitoring for obstructions, and performing essential maintenance tasks to ensure the ship’s readiness. Responsibilities
- Stand watch to monitor navigation and identify potential obstructions in the vessel’s path.
- Measure water depth and assist in maneuvering the vessel by turning the wheel on the bridge.
- Utilize emergency equipment as directed by the captain, mate, or pilot to ensure crew safety.
- Break out, rig, overhaul, and store cargo-handling gear and stationary rigging.
- Perform routine maintenance to preserve the painted surfaces of the ship and maintain line and ship equipment.
- Assist in loading and unloading cargo, ensuring safe handling and secure stowage.
- Maintain a clean and organized work environment on deck and in storage areas.
- Follow safety protocols and participate in safety drills as required.
Requirements
- Valid government-issued Able Seaman certification and relevant tankerman certification for liquid-carrying vessels.
- Proven experience as an Able Seaman or in a similar maritime role.
- Strong knowledge of vessel operations, safety procedures, and emergency protocols.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team in a dynamic environment.
- Physical fitness and the ability to perform manual tasks in various weather conditions.
- Excellent communication skills and attention to detail.
- Familiarity with maritime equipment, cargo handling, and maintenance practices.
