Job Brief

The Locomotive Switch Operator is responsible for operating and monitoring railroad track switches and locomotive instruments to ensure efficient train movement. This role requires attention to detail, strong communication skills, and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment. Ideal candidates will have experience in railroad operations and a thorough understanding of safety protocols. Key skills include coupling and uncoupling rolling stock, inspecting equipment, and relaying traffic signals.

Responsibilities

  • Operate and monitor railroad track switches and locomotive instruments to facilitate safe train operations.
  • Couple and uncouple rolling stock to assemble and disassemble trains as needed.
  • Watch for and relay traffic signals to ensure compliance with operational protocols.
  • Inspect couplings, air hoses, journal boxes, and hand brakes for proper functionality and safety.
  • Monitor for dragging equipment or obstacles on the rights-of-way to prevent accidents.
  • Coordinate with other railroad personnel to ensure smooth train operations and communication.
  • Maintain accurate records of train movements and equipment inspections.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent; additional certification in railroad operations is a plus.
  • Previous experience as a Locomotive Switch Operator or in a similar role within the railroad industry.
  • Strong understanding of railroad safety regulations and operational protocols.
  • Proficient in operating locomotive instruments and monitoring track switches.
  • Ability to perform routine inspections and identify equipment malfunctions.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills to collaborate effectively with colleagues.
  • Willingness to work in various weather conditions and on flexible schedules.
