Job Brief

As a Horticulturist, you will conduct comprehensive research in the breeding, physiology, production, and management of crops, agricultural plants, trees, and nursery stock. This role involves studying the growth dynamics in various soils, controlling pests, and investigating the chemical, physical, biological, and mineralogical aspects of soils to enhance plant or crop growth. The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in agricultural sciences and be adept at applying innovative practices to optimize yield and sustainability.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct research on plant breeding, physiology, and crop management techniques.
  • Analyze soil composition and its impact on plant growth and productivity.
  • Implement integrated pest management strategies to control agricultural pests.
  • Classify and map soils to assess their suitability for various crops.
  • Evaluate the effects of alternative agricultural practices on crop yield and soil health.
  • Collaborate with agricultural engineers and environmental scientists to develop sustainable practices.
  • Prepare technical reports and presentations on research findings for stakeholders.
  • Stay updated on industry trends, advancements, and regulatory changes in horticulture.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Horticulture, Agronomy, Plant Science, or a related field; Master’s degree preferred.
  • Proven experience in horticultural research or crop management.
  • Strong analytical skills with proficiency in soil testing and plant analysis techniques.
  • Familiarity with pest management practices and sustainable agriculture methods.
  • Excellent communication skills for collaboration and reporting.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Proficient in using agricultural research software and tools.
  • Valid driver’s license and the ability to travel as necessary for fieldwork.
