Job Brief

The Yard Hostler is responsible for efficiently maneuvering switching or locomotive engines within various operational settings, including railroad yards, industrial plants, and construction sites. This role requires a keen understanding of rail yard operations, excellent coordination skills, and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment. Candidates should possess experience in operating heavy machinery and demonstrate strong safety awareness.

Responsibilities

  • Operate switching locomotives or dinkey engines to transport railcars and freight within the yard.
  • Conduct inspections of equipment to ensure proper functionality and adherence to safety standards.
  • Coordinate with dispatchers and other team members to optimize rail yard operations.
  • Assist in loading and unloading railcars, ensuring accurate placement and securement of cargo.
  • Maintain accurate records of railcar movements and equipment usage.
  • Implement safety protocols and procedures to prevent accidents and injuries.
  • Respond to operational changes and adapt to shifting priorities effectively.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent; additional training or certification in locomotive operation is a plus.
  • Proven experience as a Yard Hostler or in a similar role within the transportation or logistics industry.
  • Strong knowledge of railroad operations and safety regulations.
  • Ability to operate heavy machinery and possess relevant certifications (e.g., CDL preferred).
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
  • Strong problem-solving abilities and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays as needed.
