Job Brief
The Vessel Ordinary Seaman plays a vital role in the safe and efficient operation of maritime vessels. This entry-level position is responsible for assisting with navigation, cargo handling, and general maintenance tasks on board. Candidates should possess a strong work ethic, attention to detail, and the ability to follow instructions from the captain and mates. A government-issued certification and tankerman certification are required for those working on liquid-carrying vessels.
Responsibilities
- Stand watch to monitor for obstructions in the vessel’s path and ensure safe navigation.
- Measure water depth and operate steering equipment under the direction of the captain, mate, or pilot.
- Break out, rig, overhaul, and store cargo-handling gear, including stationary rigging and running gear.
- Perform maintenance tasks to preserve the painted surfaces of the ship and maintain line and ship equipment.
- Assist in emergency equipment operations as directed by senior crew members.
- Help in the loading and unloading of cargo, ensuring adherence to safety protocols.
- Participate in safety drills and training sessions to enhance maritime safety skills.
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of work areas on the vessel.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent; maritime training or coursework preferred.
- Valid government-issued certification for seafarers; tankerman certification required for liquid-carrying vessels.
- Ability to work in a physically demanding environment and endure long hours at sea.
- Basic knowledge of maritime safety procedures and emergency protocols.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a team.
- Familiarity with cargo operations and maintenance of ship equipment is a plus.
- Willingness to comply with all maritime regulations and safety standards.
