Job Brief
As an Urban Forester, you will manage public and private forested lands, focusing on economic, recreational, and conservation purposes. This role requires expertise in forest management practices, including timber inventory, wildlife habitat conservation, and compliance with environmental regulations. You will develop and implement plans for planting and nurturing new trees, monitor forest health, and optimize harvesting schedules. The ideal candidate will possess strong analytical skills, a background in forestry, and experience in negotiating contracts related to timber procurement.
Responsibilities
- Conduct inventory assessments of standing timber, including type, quantity, and location.
- Evaluate the economic value of timber and negotiate purchase agreements.
- Develop management plans for public and private forested lands to enhance recreational and conservation opportunities.
- Implement strategies to conserve wildlife habitats, creek beds, and water quality.
- Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal environmental regulations.
- Devise and execute planting plans for new trees and monitor their growth for optimal health.
- Analyze soil stability and develop methods to maintain soil and water quality.
- Determine optimal harvesting schedules to maximize timber yield while ensuring sustainability.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Forestry, Environmental Science, or a related field.
- Proven experience in urban forestry or forest management practices.
- Strong understanding of environmental regulations and conservation strategies.
- Technical skills in GIS and forest inventory software.
- Ability to conduct habitat assessments and develop management plans.
- Excellent negotiation and communication skills for contract management.
- Certifications such as Certified Arborist or Registered Professional Forester are preferred.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills related to forestry and land management.
