Job Brief
The Towboat Engineer is responsible for supervising and coordinating the activities of crew members engaged in the operation and maintenance of engines, boilers, deck machinery, as well as electrical, sanitary, and refrigeration equipment aboard the vessel. This role requires a deep understanding of marine engineering principles, strong leadership skills, and the ability to ensure compliance with safety regulations. Ideal candidates should possess extensive experience in marine operations and demonstrate proficiency in troubleshooting and maintaining complex machinery systems.
Responsibilities
- Supervise and coordinate the operation and maintenance of all engine room equipment, including main engines, generators, and auxiliary systems.
- Conduct regular inspections to ensure the safe and efficient operation of engines, boilers, and deck machinery.
- Manage fuel and lubrication systems, ensuring optimal performance and adherence to environmental regulations.
- Lead and train crew members in safe operating procedures and emergency response protocols.
- Maintain accurate records of maintenance, repairs, and inspections in compliance with regulatory standards.
- Collaborate with the captain and other department heads to ensure seamless vessel operations.
- Diagnose and resolve mechanical and electrical malfunctions, implementing effective solutions.
- Ensure compliance with safety and environmental policies, conducting safety drills and training as needed.
Requirements
- Proven experience as a marine engineer or in a similar role within the maritime industry.
- Strong knowledge of marine engineering systems, including propulsion, electrical, and hydraulic systems.
- Valid marine engineering certification and relevant safety training (e.g., STCW certification).
- Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to troubleshoot mechanical issues efficiently.
- Strong leadership skills with the ability to manage and motivate a diverse crew.
- Effective communication skills, both verbal and written, to coordinate with team members and management.
- Ability to work in a physically demanding environment and respond to emergency situations promptly.
- Willingness to work extended hours and travel for long periods in various marine conditions.
