Job Brief
As a Rapid Transit Operator, you will be responsible for safely operating subway or elevated suburban trains, as well as electric-powered streetcars, to efficiently transport passengers while adhering to strict schedules. This role requires a strong commitment to passenger safety, excellent communication skills, and the ability to handle fare collection when necessary. Ideal candidates will possess prior experience in transit operations or a related field and demonstrate proficiency in navigating complex transit systems.
Responsibilities
- Operate subway trains and streetcars in compliance with safety regulations and operational guidelines.
- Monitor train performance and troubleshoot technical issues during service.
- Ensure timely departures and arrivals at designated stops to maintain schedules.
- Assist passengers with fare collection and provide information on routes and schedules.
- Conduct pre-trip inspections of trains and report any maintenance needs to the appropriate personnel.
- Adhere to emergency protocols and respond effectively to incidents on board.
- Maintain clear communication with dispatch and other operational staff throughout the shift.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent; relevant certifications in transit operations are a plus.
- Proven experience as a train operator, conductor, or in a similar role within public transportation.
- Strong understanding of transit safety protocols and operational procedures.
- Excellent customer service skills and ability to communicate effectively with passengers.
- Ability to operate complex machinery and navigate transit systems efficiently.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to remain calm under pressure.
- Valid driver’s license and any necessary certifications required by local transit authorities.
