Job Brief

As a Railroad Firer, you will play a crucial role in ensuring the safe and efficient operation of train movements. This position involves operating and monitoring railroad track switches and locomotive instruments, as well as coupling and uncoupling rolling stock for train assembly and disassembly. Successful candidates will possess strong attention to detail and communication skills, as you will be responsible for relaying traffic signals and monitoring the integrity of train components. A background in railway operations or related fields is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Operate and monitor railroad track switches to direct train movements safely.
  • Couple and uncouple rolling stock to form or dismantle trains as needed.
  • Watch for and relay traffic signals to ensure timely communication and safety.
  • Inspect couplings, air hoses, journal boxes, and hand brakes for operational integrity.
  • Monitor for dragging equipment or obstacles on the railroad right-of-way.
  • Maintain clear communication with train crews and dispatchers regarding train status.
  • Adhere to safety protocols and regulations to minimize risks and ensure operational safety.
  • Document train movements and maintenance inspections as required.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent; vocational training in railway operations is a plus.
  • Strong understanding of railroad operations and safety regulations.
  • Experience operating railroad equipment or similar machinery preferred.
  • Excellent communication skills for effective coordination with team members.
  • Ability to work in various weather conditions and maintain focus on tasks.
  • Basic mechanical skills for inspecting and troubleshooting equipment issues.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
