Job Brief

The Railroad Engineer plays a critical role in operating electric, diesel-electric, steam, or gas-turbine-electric locomotives to efficiently transport passengers or freight across designated routes. This position requires a keen understanding of train orders, electronic and manual signals, and adherence to railroad rules and regulations. Ideal candidates will possess a strong background in locomotive operation, safety protocols, and industry regulations, ensuring optimal performance and safety during rail operations.

Responsibilities

  • Operate various types of locomotives, including electric, diesel-electric, steam, and gas-turbine-electric, to transport goods and passengers.
  • Interpret and execute train orders, signals, and railroad regulations while ensuring compliance with safety standards.
  • Monitor train performance and make real-time adjustments to maintain efficient operation and safety.
  • Conduct regular inspections of locomotives and equipment prior to departures to ensure operational readiness.
  • Communicate effectively with dispatchers and other railroad personnel to coordinate schedules and address any operational issues.
  • Document and report any incidents, maintenance needs, or safety concerns to appropriate personnel.
  • Participate in ongoing training programs to stay current with railroad technologies and safety practices.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent; further education or specialized training in railroad operations preferred.
  • Valid locomotive engineer certification and relevant licenses as required by federal and state regulations.
  • Proven experience operating locomotives or heavy machinery in a safety-sensitive environment.
  • Strong knowledge of railroad operations, safety protocols, and regulatory compliance.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to remain calm under pressure.
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written, for liaising with team members and management.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays as required by the rail schedule.
