Job Brief

As an Objects Conservator, you will be responsible for the restoration, maintenance, and preparation of diverse objects within museum collections for storage, research, or exhibition purposes. This role requires expertise in handling various materials, including artifacts, textiles, artworks, fossils, and botanicals. The ideal candidate will possess strong skills in conservation techniques, documentation, and exhibit installation to ensure the preservation of cultural heritage and scientific specimens.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct detailed assessments of objects to determine conservation needs and treatment options.
  • Implement restoration procedures, utilizing appropriate materials and techniques to preserve integrity and authenticity.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of all conservation activities, including treatment records and condition reports.
  • Prepare objects for storage, research, and exhibition, ensuring compliance with best practices in conservation.
  • Collaborate with curators and other museum professionals to develop and install exhibitions that effectively showcase collections.
  • Monitor environmental conditions and implement preventive measures to ensure the safety of collections.
  • Educate staff and visitors about conservation practices and the importance of preserving cultural and historical objects.
  • Stay current with conservation trends, techniques, and materials through professional development and research.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Conservation, Fine Arts, or a related field; Master’s degree preferred.
  • Proven experience in objects conservation, with a focus on specific materials or disciplines (e.g., textiles, ceramics, or manuscripts).
  • Strong understanding of conservation ethics, standards, and best practices relevant to museum collections.
  • Proficiency in conservation techniques, including cleaning, repairing, and stabilizing artifacts.
  • Familiarity with laboratory equipment, tools, and materials used in conservation processes.
  • Excellent documentation skills and attention to detail for maintaining records of treatments and assessments.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment while managing multiple projects effectively.
