Job Brief
As a Lock and Dam Operator, you will be responsible for the safe and efficient operation of bridges, canal locks, and lighthouses, facilitating marine passage on inland waterways. This role requires a solid understanding of hydraulic systems, navigation protocols, and safety regulations. Ideal candidates will possess relevant experience in marine operations and demonstrate strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills.
Responsibilities
- Operate and monitor lock and dam machinery to ensure the safe passage of vessels.
- Coordinate with vessel operators and other team members to manage waterway traffic effectively.
- Conduct routine inspections and maintenance of equipment to ensure operational efficiency.
- Implement safety protocols to minimize risks to personnel and marine traffic.
- Document operational activities and report any discrepancies or incidents to management.
- Supervise and train junior operators and staff in lock and dam operations.
- Respond to emergency situations swiftly and effectively to ensure safety.
- Maintain accurate records of water levels, weather conditions, and vessel movements.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent; additional training in marine operations preferred.
- Proven experience as a Lock Operator, Bridge Operator, or similar role in marine transportation.
- Strong understanding of navigational principles and safety regulations.
- Ability to operate hydraulic and mechanical systems effectively.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for team collaboration.
- Certification in CPR and First Aid is highly desirable.
- Strong problem-solving skills and ability to respond to emergencies.
- Willingness to work irregular hours, including nights and weekends, as required by operational needs.
