Job Brief
The Law Librarian administers and maintains legal information collections, ensuring public or private access through reference services and borrowing systems. This role requires expertise in legal research, collection management, and user education to support clients in navigating various informational materials, including books, periodicals, databases, and multimedia resources. A successful candidate will possess strong organizational skills, proficiency in library management software, and a solid understanding of legal terminology and research methodologies.
Responsibilities
- Administer library operations, including cataloging, circulation, and maintenance of legal information resources.
- Assist users in locating and organizing legal information, providing expert guidance on research techniques.
- Develop and implement instructional programs for users on accessing legal databases and utilizing library resources effectively.
- Evaluate and acquire new legal materials, ensuring the collection reflects current legal trends and user needs.
- Maintain library technology, including media equipment and digital platforms, to enhance user experience.
- Collaborate with legal professionals and faculty to curate relevant resources and support research initiatives.
- Conduct outreach programs to promote library services and resources within the legal community.
Requirements
- Master’s degree in Library and Information Science (MLIS) or a related field, with a focus on law preferred.
- Experience working in a law library or similar legal environment is highly desirable.
- Proficiency in library management systems and legal research tools, such as Westlaw and LexisNexis.
- Strong knowledge of legal terminology, research methodologies, and information literacy standards.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to instruct and assist diverse user groups.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a dynamic environment.
- Familiarity with digital content management and preservation practices related to legal materials.
