Job Brief
The Highway Maintainer is responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of highways, municipal and rural roads, airport runways, and associated rights-of-way. This role involves performing essential tasks such as patching eroded pavement, repairing guard rails, maintaining highway markers, and managing snow fences. Candidates should possess relevant experience in road maintenance, strong problem-solving skills, and a commitment to safety protocols.
Responsibilities
- Conduct regular inspections of highways and roads to identify maintenance needs.
- Patch and repair broken or eroded pavement to ensure safe driving conditions.
- Repair and maintain guard rails, highway markers, and snow fences.
- Clear brush and mow grass along the roadways to maintain visibility and safety.
- Operate snow plows and other equipment to remove snow and ice from road surfaces.
- Respond to emergency maintenance requests to address road hazards promptly.
- Document maintenance activities and report any significant issues to management.
- Adhere to safety regulations and best practices while performing maintenance tasks.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent; additional training in road maintenance is a plus.
- Proven experience in highway or road maintenance operations.
- Knowledge of road construction and maintenance techniques.
- Ability to operate heavy machinery and maintenance equipment safely.
- Strong physical stamina and the ability to work in various weather conditions.
- Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record; commercial driver’s license (CDL) preferred.
- Familiarity with safety protocols and first aid practices.
- Excellent communication skills and ability to work collaboratively with a team.
