Job Brief
The Haulage Engine Operator is responsible for driving switching locomotives or dinkey engines within various settings, including railroad yards, industrial plants, quarries, and construction projects. This role requires a skilled operator with a strong understanding of locomotive operations, safety protocols, and efficient material transport. The ideal candidate will possess excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment, ensuring timely and safe movement of materials.
Responsibilities
- Operate switching locomotives or dinkey engines within designated areas to facilitate material transport.
- Conduct pre-operational checks on engines to ensure they are in safe working condition.
- Follow safety protocols and regulations to prevent accidents and ensure the safety of personnel and equipment.
- Coordinate with yard supervisors and other operational staff to optimize loading and unloading processes.
- Monitor and maintain engine performance, reporting any mechanical issues promptly.
- Maintain accurate records of engine operations, including hours of use and maintenance performed.
- Assist in training new operators in safe engine operation techniques and best practices.
- Respond to urgent operational needs and adjust schedules as required to meet project demands.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent; certification in locomotive operation preferred.
- Proven experience operating switch engines or similar machinery in a railway or industrial setting.
- Strong understanding of locomotive mechanics, safety standards, and operational protocols.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team, demonstrating strong communication skills.
- Valid operator’s license and any required certifications specific to locomotive operation.
- Physical stamina and the ability to work in varying weather conditions.
- Basic troubleshooting skills and the ability to perform minor maintenance tasks on engines.
