Job Brief
As a Forest Ecologist, you will manage and assess public and private forested lands to optimize economic, recreational, and conservation outcomes. This role requires expertise in inventorying timber resources, appraising timber value, and negotiating procurement contracts. You will also focus on wildlife habitat conservation, water quality management, and soil stability, ensuring compliance with environmental regulations. Your responsibilities will include developing and implementing sustainable forestry management plans, monitoring tree health, and determining optimal harvesting schedules.
Responsibilities
- Conduct comprehensive inventories of forested areas to assess timber types, quantities, and locations.
- Appraise the value of standing timber and negotiate purchase contracts with landowners and stakeholders.
- Develop and execute management plans that balance economic, recreational, and conservation needs.
- Monitor and analyze wildlife habitats, creek beds, and soil stability to enhance ecosystem health.
- Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal environmental regulations governing forestry practices.
- Design and implement reforestation programs, including species selection and planting strategies.
- Conduct health assessments of trees and forests to identify diseases, pests, and growth conditions.
- Collaborate with government agencies, NGOs, and community groups to foster sustainable forest management practices.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Forestry, Ecology, Environmental Science, or a related field; master’s degree preferred.
- Proven experience in forest management, ecology, or a related discipline.
- Strong knowledge of forest ecosystems, wildlife management, and conservation practices.
- Proficiency in GIS software and forestry management tools for data analysis and mapping.
- Excellent negotiation and communication skills for engaging with stakeholders and landowners.
- Certifications in forestry or ecological assessment (e.g., Certified Forester, Ecologist) are a plus.
- Ability to conduct fieldwork, including physical stamina for outdoor activities in various weather conditions.
