Job Brief
The First Mate plays a crucial role in the safe and efficient operation of ships and water vessels, including tugboats and ferryboats. This position requires a skilled individual with extensive maritime experience and the ability to command and supervise vessel operations. The First Mate supports the Captain in navigational duties, crew management, and ensures compliance with safety regulations. A valid U.S. Coast Guard license is mandatory, along with strong leadership and communication skills to facilitate effective teamwork on board.
Responsibilities
- Assist the Captain in navigating and steering the vessel according to maritime regulations.
- Supervise deck crew and manage daily operations to ensure smooth vessel performance.
- Conduct safety drills and ensure compliance with safety protocols and regulations.
- Monitor vessel performance, including fuel consumption and equipment functionality.
- Manage cargo loading and unloading processes, ensuring cargo safety and stability.
- Maintain accurate logs of daily operations, inspections, and navigational details.
- Provide training and support to junior crew members and new hires.
- Act as the Captain in their absence, making critical decisions regarding vessel operation.
Requirements
- Valid U.S. Coast Guard First Mate license or equivalent certification.
- Proven experience as a First Mate or in a similar maritime leadership role.
- Strong knowledge of maritime navigation, safety regulations, and vessel operations.
- Excellent communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work in various weather conditions and manage emergency situations effectively.
- Experience with vessel maintenance and knowledge of equipment troubleshooting.
- Basic understanding of maritime law and environmental regulations.
- Physical fitness and the ability to perform manual tasks as required.
