Job Brief
The Exhibitions and Collections Manager is responsible for overseeing the management and administration of collections, including artwork, historic items, and scientific specimens within a museum or cultural institution. This role requires a strong background in collection management, curatorial practices, and public engagement, along with proven experience in organizing exhibitions and facilitating educational programs. Responsibilities
- Administer and maintain the integrity of collections, ensuring proper conservation and documentation of items.
- Plan, coordinate, and execute exhibitions and public programs that engage diverse audiences.
- Conduct research on collection items to enhance educational opportunities and public understanding.
- Collaborate with curators, educators, and community partners to develop innovative programming.
- Manage collection records and databases, ensuring compliance with industry standards and best practices.
- Develop and implement collection policies, procedures, and strategic plans.
- Oversee the acquisition and deaccession of collection items in accordance with institutional guidelines.
- Train and supervise staff and volunteers involved in collection management and exhibition preparation.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Museum Studies, Art History, Cultural Heritage, or a related field; Master’s degree preferred.
- Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in collections management or exhibition planning.
- Strong knowledge of preservation techniques and collection care standards.
- Proficiency in collection management software and database systems.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for public engagement and collaboration.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Experience in grant writing and fundraising for exhibition programs is a plus.
- Familiarity with local, state, and federal regulations regarding collection management.
