Job Brief
The Deckhand plays a crucial role in the safe and efficient operation of a vessel, assisting the captain and crew in various duties. This entry-level position requires individuals to stand watch for obstructions, measure water depth, and operate emergency equipment as directed. Ideal candidates will possess strong teamwork skills and a commitment to maintaining the ship’s equipment and safety protocols. Previous experience on vessels or in marine operations is advantageous, alongside necessary certifications for liquid-carrying vessels if applicable.
Responsibilities
- Stand watch to monitor for obstructions in the vessel’s path and report any hazards.
- Measure water depth and assist in navigation by turning the wheel or using emergency equipment as directed.
- Break out, rig, overhaul, and store cargo-handling gear, stationary rigging, and running gear.
- Perform maintenance tasks to preserve the painted surfaces of the ship and maintain line and ship equipment.
- Assist in loading and unloading cargo while ensuring safety protocols are followed.
- Participate in safety drills and respond to emergencies as part of the crew.
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of the deck and working areas.
- Follow instructions from the captain, mate, or pilot to ensure operational efficiency.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent; relevant maritime training is a plus.
- Must hold a government-issued certification and tankerman certification when working aboard liquid-carrying vessels.
- Basic knowledge of marine safety protocols and emergency procedures.
- Strong physical stamina and ability to work in various weather conditions.
- Excellent teamwork and communication skills.
- Ability to follow directions and work under the supervision of senior crew members.
- Previous experience as an able seaman or ordinary seaman is preferred but not mandatory.
