Job Brief
The Dam Tender plays a critical role in managing the operation and maintenance of bridges, canal locks, and lighthouses to facilitate safe marine passage through inland waterways. This position requires proficiency in monitoring water levels, controlling lock mechanisms, and ensuring the safe transit of vessels. Ideal candidates possess strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and a solid understanding of hydraulic systems and navigational protocols, combined with relevant experience in marine operations.
Responsibilities
- Operate and maintain drawbridges, locks, and other waterway structures to ensure safe navigation.
- Monitor water levels and flow rates, adjusting operations accordingly to maintain optimal conditions.
- Supervise and coordinate the activities of support staff and contractors involved in waterway operations.
- Communicate with vessel operators to provide guidance and information regarding transit schedules and safety procedures.
- Perform routine inspections and maintenance on machinery and equipment, documenting repairs and upgrades.
- Respond promptly to emergency situations, implementing safety protocols to protect personnel and vessels.
- Maintain accurate logs of operations, incidents, and maintenance activities for regulatory compliance.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent; additional technical training in marine operations or mechanical systems preferred.
- Proven experience in operating bridges, locks, or similar marine infrastructure.
- Strong understanding of hydraulic systems, navigational aids, and maritime safety regulations.
- Ability to work in varying weather conditions and at irregular hours, including weekends and holidays.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for effective interaction with crew and vessel operators.
- Certification in First Aid and CPR; additional maritime certifications may be required.
- Basic computer skills for logging operations and utilizing monitoring systems.
