Job Brief

As a Court Stenographer, you will play a crucial role in accurately capturing, storing, and transcribing verbatim records of legal proceedings, including trials and pretrial hearings. Utilizing specialized stenographic equipment, you will ensure that all spoken words are recorded with precision for legal documentation. Candidates should possess a strong command of legal terminology, exceptional attention to detail, and proficiency in computerized stenographic systems. Previous experience in court reporting or a related field is essential for success in this role.

Responsibilities

  • Utilize stenographic equipment to capture verbatim transcripts of court proceedings, including trials, depositions, and hearings.
  • Ensure accuracy and completeness in the transcription of spoken dialogue and legal terminology.
  • Store, retrieve, and maintain records of all transcripts in accordance with legal standards and protocols.
  • Provide real-time transcription services for live broadcasts and events, catering to hearing-impaired viewers through captioning.
  • Work collaboratively with legal professionals, including attorneys and judges, to facilitate smooth courtroom operations.
  • Review and edit transcripts for clarity, grammar, and adherence to legal formatting requirements.
  • Maintain confidentiality and security of sensitive legal documents and proceedings.
  • Stay updated on changes in legal terminology and technology related to court reporting and transcription.

Requirements

  • Completion of an accredited court reporting program or equivalent training.
  • Certification as a Registered Professional Reporter (RPR) or equivalent credential preferred.
  • Proficiency in stenographic software and computerized transcription equipment.
  • Strong understanding of legal terminology, court procedures, and documentation standards.
  • Exceptional typing speed and accuracy, with a minimum requirement of 225 wpm.
  • Excellent listening skills and ability to concentrate in fast-paced environments.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information with discretion.
