Job Brief

As a City Bailiff, you will play a critical role in maintaining order and security within the courts of law. You will be responsible for ensuring that court proceedings run smoothly by managing courtroom activities, enforcing court orders, and providing assistance to judges and court personnel. The ideal candidate will possess strong communication skills, a keen understanding of legal processes, and the ability to handle high-pressure situations effectively.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain order and security during court sessions, ensuring a respectful and safe environment for all participants.
  • Enforce court orders and directives as mandated by judges, including the execution of evictions and repossessions.
  • Assist judges and court staff in managing courtroom logistics and procedures.
  • Escort defendants and witnesses to and from the courtroom, ensuring they adhere to legal protocols.
  • Monitor courtroom activities and address any disruptions or violations of court rules promptly.
  • Prepare and serve legal documents as required, including summons and subpoenas.
  • Collaborate with law enforcement agencies to ensure compliance with court orders and enhance courtroom security.
  • Provide exceptional customer service to the public, answering queries and directing them to appropriate resources within the court system.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent; additional education in criminal justice or law enforcement is preferred.
  • Proven experience as a bailiff or in a similar role within the legal or law enforcement field.
  • Strong understanding of legal terminology, courtroom procedures, and civil rights.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to de-escalate tense situations.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise discretion in handling sensitive information.
  • Physical fitness and the ability to stand for extended periods, as well as the capacity to handle potentially confrontational scenarios.
  • Certification in first aid and CPR is a plus.
