Job Brief

The Car Ferry Captain is responsible for commanding and supervising the operations of ferries and water vessels, ensuring safe and efficient transportation of vehicles and passengers across designated waterways. This role requires extensive maritime knowledge, strong leadership skills, and a valid U.S. Coast Guard captain’s license. The ideal candidate should have experience in vessel navigation, emergency response, and compliance with safety regulations, while demonstrating exceptional decision-making abilities in high-pressure situations.

Responsibilities

  • Command and oversee the operation of car ferries and associated vessels, ensuring safe navigation and adherence to maritime regulations.
  • Conduct pre-departure checks and inspections of the vessel to ensure operational readiness and safety compliance.
  • Monitor weather conditions, tides, and currents to make informed navigational decisions.
  • Direct crew members in their duties, fostering a safe and cooperative working environment.
  • Implement emergency procedures and respond effectively to incidents, ensuring passenger and crew safety at all times.
  • Maintain accurate logs of vessel operations, including passenger counts, cargo loads, and safety drills.
  • Communicate effectively with port authorities, other vessels, and crew regarding navigation plans and operational updates.
  • Ensure compliance with environmental regulations and promote sustainable practices during operations.

Requirements

  • Valid U.S. Coast Guard captain’s license (Master’s license preferred).
  • Proven experience in vessel navigation and operations, particularly in ferry services.
  • Strong knowledge of maritime safety regulations and emergency protocols.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to remain calm and make critical decisions in high-pressure environments.
  • Familiarity with navigational tools and technologies.
  • Physical fitness and the ability to perform duties in varying weather conditions.
  • High school diploma or equivalent; additional maritime training or certifications are a plus.
