Job Brief
The Bridge Tender is responsible for the operation and maintenance of bridges, canal locks, and lighthouses to facilitate safe marine passage on inland waterways. This role requires proficiency in monitoring and controlling bridge mechanisms, ensuring compliance with safety regulations, and coordinating with marine traffic. The ideal candidate will possess strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently or as part of a team. Previous experience in a similar role is preferred.
Responsibilities
- Operate drawbridge, lock, and slip bridge systems to allow safe passage for vessels.
- Monitor waterway conditions and communicate with marine traffic to ensure smooth operations.
- Conduct regular inspections and maintenance of bridge and lock mechanisms to ensure optimal functionality.
- Respond to emergency situations and implement safety protocols to protect both personnel and equipment.
- Maintain accurate logs and records of bridge operations and maintenance activities.
- Supervise and train junior staff or assistants in bridge operations and safety procedures.
- Collaborate with local authorities and navigation agencies to improve operational efficiency.
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations governing bridge operations.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent; additional technical training is a plus.
- Proven experience as a Bridge Tender, lock operator, or in a similar role.
- Strong understanding of mechanical systems and operational safety protocols.
- Ability to operate complex machinery and respond quickly in emergency situations.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to interact with marine traffic and team members.
- Proficiency in record-keeping and reporting procedures.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to obtain any necessary certifications.
- Willingness to work flexible hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
