Job Brief

The Verger plays a vital role in supporting the spiritual and operational needs of a religious community. This position involves overseeing the maintenance and preparation of worship spaces, assisting clergy during services, and coordinating events. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of religious practices, excellent organizational skills, and experience in facility management. Strong communication and interpersonal abilities are essential for engaging with community members and visitors.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and maintain worship spaces for services, ensuring cleanliness and proper setup of furnishings.
  • Assist clergy during services by managing logistics and providing necessary support.
  • Coordinate and facilitate special events, including weddings, funerals, and community gatherings.
  • Manage the inventory of liturgical supplies and equipment, ensuring availability and proper storage.
  • Oversee the maintenance of grounds and facilities, coordinating with maintenance staff and vendors as needed.
  • Engage with community members and visitors, providing information about services and events.
  • Support administrative tasks, including scheduling and record-keeping related to events and services.
  • Promote a welcoming atmosphere within the religious community and participate in outreach initiatives.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent; relevant experience in a religious or community setting preferred.
  • Strong understanding of religious traditions and practices within the community.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks effectively.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills for engaging with diverse groups.
  • Basic knowledge of facility management and maintenance procedures.
  • Proficiency in using technology for scheduling, communication, and record-keeping.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including weekends and holidays as needed.
  • First Aid/CPR certification is a plus, along with any relevant training in hospitality or event management.
