24 years I signed up to join the Army. The recruiter from this location went to my high school Amundsen High School. I can tell you I was not the best fit due to my learning disability, not knowing how to drive, not having a driver’s license at the time and not knowing how to swim. I did well academically but did poorly on standardize test. I had good hand eye coordination for playing sports but not for anything mechanical. I say all that to give context and confirm that yes I had my baggage and the military’s culture of uniformity and standardize test did not adequately measure my strengths and abilities.
Despite my baggage my recruiter talked to me about the Illinois Veterans Grant and the Gi Bill ( I was able to be qualified for post 911 GI bill and Gi bill). Yes when I was in the Army I had a long period of time in which I did not want to be in the military and wanted to quit. My resolved paid off. The honorable discharged I received paved the way for me to use the educational benefits that I earned. These benefits were truly a blessing to me. I found out that there was a loophole in the education benefits that rewarded you for continuously going to school. This loophole you could only be changed once per month for educational benefit used. That means if you did not take a break while in school and took the maximum amount of classes each semester you can graduate early with an undergraduate degree.
It took me 2 years and 4 months to get my Bachelor’s degree in Social Work. My GPA did take a hit due to the pace but I had a 3.14 GPA which was good enough to get me into Graduate school. I completed in 8 months because I was in an advance standing program and received a Master’s Degree in Social Work. So I was able to go to school for free and live off my GI bill/ post 911 Gi Bill. I secured a job as a Social Worker for many years before using my education benefits again to pay for a psychopathology class that I needed to take for me to be eligible to get my clinical license.
I also was able to get my disability claim approved which gave me 40% that with the exception of my medication and dental pays for my health care 100%. I also used the education benefits to pay for me to take my clinical license exam. Now I myself reside in Indiana. I am a grandfather, a father of 5, a husband, a home owner, paid off my car, A License Clinical Social Worker, and a School Social Worker. One of the biggest reasons that I was able to be so blessed in my life and achieve the accolades I did was due to having a great recruiter from this location that helped change my life.
