In working with Ellen I had shared that my mom wasn’t particularly validating of my emotions. I was a sensitive kid. I mean Boomer parents weren’t validating all of their kids feelings. It just wasn’t a thing in the 80s for most kids. Anyway, she asked what I was like as a baby and I said my mom told me I was a great baby and slept through the night. Ellen proceeded to say babies don’t sleep through the night. They need to be fed every 2 hours so it sounds like your mom let you cry and be hungry all night. No joke she actually said that. I told her that was really out of line. And that for all of my mom’s faults I 100% to my core do not ever think she would let me cry and be hungry all night. I said I found her comments very upsetting. Her reply was literally silence. Seriously silence. Horrible and I fired her after that. Not only did Ellen say something extremely out of line, she did nothing to try and repair it when I shared how her comment made me feel. Left me leaving therapy with her worse off than when I began.
