This scene comes out of an old blues 💙 song. The only staff present reminded me of a cross between an auction and a relay station like PBX dispatch. He looked really busy and had to issue checks and place employees out to work all at the same time. The office setup reminded me of a busy government office back when they use to meet with back to work participants.
I overheard some employees inquiring about their paychecks being late. Apparently, the staff was short and only processed some of the employees pay that same day. It appeared as though the employees who were well known to staff were paid first and the rest had to wait until the next day.
The way that one signs up for work is disorganized and haphazard. There’s no system in place to match employees with jobs without having to stand in queue and waiting one’s turn, if it ever comes.
I’ve worked labor elsewhere (recently and long ago for extra money) and it was a more streamlined process where the employee would select their assignment either on the company’s website, app, or over the telephone if the employee lacked access to technology. Thus, waiting in queue for hours to find out if one may even work that day is not only unnecessary, but so outdated.
There were posters with disclaimers on the wall that read that your safety is your responsibility. Take that however you will.
When I applied with them, the information that the recruiter provided to me was not completely accurate. She told me that work shoes would suffice. When I showed up for work, all of the jobs required steel toe boots. There’s a big difference between work shoes and steel toe boots. Also, some of the other assignments required other work equipment/uniform as needed such as vests. Sometimes they do provide a hard hat, gloves and glasses. If you have a certification, then this may not be a big deal. But if you are just looking for fast money, this is something to consider.
I feel like I wasted time unnecessarily. If the HR process was more modern, I think that we would all benefit.
