I recently dealt with Richard K from Hunters’ family department to discuss my case. Initially, he showed interest in taking it on. I understand that lawyers sometimes cannot take certain cases due to their capacity, but Richard assured me he had the capacity to handle mine. After passing their ID checks, I waited a couple of weeks for further communication.
When I called him on Monday, he apologised for his unavailability and promised to send the client engagement letter that day. I politely responded that receiving it by some of the same week would be fine, acknowledging his busy schedule. His response was he would send on Monday, so I keep an eye on on my email. However, he did not send it at all anything.
On Thursday evening, I emailed him to request confirmation by the end of Friday regarding whether he would take the case, or if I should instruct another lawyer. With apparent disregard, he replied late on Friday, stating, “Sorry, I can’t respond by Friday. And you can instruct another lawyer if you like.” In response, I inquired again about his capacity to handle my case, but it’s been another week without a reply.
The reason I’m leaving this feedback is that I would have understood and respected a straightforward response at the beginning, or even a polite refusal later, due to capacity issues. However, that was not the case. He promised to take on the case but then ignored me, seemingly when he realised it wouldn’t be particularly lucrative, as I don’t come from an ultra-wealthy family. This lack of response, I found very disrespectful.
Hunters Law Firm promotes its Pro Bono work and legal aid, but in my case, where I was a private-paying client, it seems my case wasn’t considered high net worth enough. When it came to demonstrating basic human decency, sadly, one of their legal representatives in the family department failed. We trust these legal representatives during the hard times of our lives, and while I understand the importance of financial considerations I.e. everyone has to earn Money. But ignoring clients and not honouring commitments is both unprofessional and disrespectful I found!
