Giving two stars instead of one because Yarmouth gave me a partial refund, but it was still half of what I requested and they only increased it after I sent them a photo of the mouse feces I found behind a cupboard.
The state of the apartment on my move-in was downright unsanitary. There were gaping holes in the walls and baseboards, and the brick floor’s sealant is (still) flaking off. It also wasn’t properly cleaned, enough so that it stained all of my white socks brown. Neither the front nor the back outdoor areas had been cleaned either. (I’m not including all of the routine issues like the garbage disposal not working.)
The maintenance manager initially dismissed me when I asked about repairs and cleaning, asking me if I had seen the apartment before I rented it and reminding me that it was an old property. But after he saw photos, he genuinely apologized. I hoped everything would be fixed.
Some of the contractors were fine, even great. But I came home one day to find that Yarmouth’s painter/carpenter Glen–who was also supposed to power wash the outdoor areas–had coated everything in dirt, smashed my glass patio table top, left broken glass everywhere and dirty water inside the apartment. What’s worse is that he simply ran away from the problem. No call to me, no call to Yarmouth.
Yarmouth replaced the table top, but then tried to send Glen back into my apartment for a different issue, with the manager saying the incident is “behind us now.” I told him it was obviously not behind us, and to send someone else.
In total, everything took over a month to resolve (minus the floor, which I gave up on because I didn’t know where I would move all of my stuff to have it repaired). I asked for a month’s rent credit but Yarmouth only offered me a week.
It wasn’t until I uncovered the mouse feces behind a cabinet that they increased it to two weeks. Which is better than nothing, but woefully inadequate once you’ve had to clean up mouse excrement before dinner in an apartment you’ve only lived in for a month.
My one consolation is that the mouse issue appears to have been a previous problem. I’m still dealing with a bad pill bug infestation, though, even after the exterminator treated the apartment. I often find multiple bugs each day, so now I’m trying to track and plug their entry routes on my own.
