I had an interview with this agency about four weeks ago regarding a position I was interested in, but I never received any follow-up communication about the opportunity.
Having worked with multiple temp agencies across various states, I’ve found that many are open to negotiating a fair hourly wage—something that benefits both the worker and the agency. It’s understood that agencies profit from every hour we work, and without workers, their operations would not be sustainable.
During my interview, I asked one of the representatives if she could speak with the client about the possibility of increasing the pay rate by a dollar or two based on my experience. Unfortunately, her response came across as harsh and dismissive.
It’s well known that staffing agencies can apply a markup of 20% to 75% on each worker’s hourly rate when billing their clients. They have the ability to negotiate with both clients and workers, but many choose not to be transparent about this process. In skilled trades especially, the markup tends to be significantly higher than in general labor or office positions. Perhaps this agency already has access to a large labor pool, which may explain their lack of interest in advocating for fairer compensation on behalf of individual workers.
Compared to other agencies I’ve worked with, this one does not appear to prioritize fairness or the well-being of its workers. The focus seems to be primarily on maximizing profit per placement.
