I lasted just three hours on my first day before quitting. In my experience and opinion, the office, particularly the manager, appears extremely stressed from the workload and staff shortage, making her defensive, easily upset, and hard to communicate with. On my first day, I was two minutes late due to my Uber being delayed by the train, despite planning ahead. I informed them 10 minutes in advance, but the reaction was unbalanced, as if I were an hour late without notice. There was no grace or understanding.
The office environment was tense, with the manager even making a snide remark to the front desk about breaks, as if taking a minute for a bathroom or coffee was a problem. Breakfast was frowned upon, and you’re expected to work non-stop, despite no proper training. Michaela was the only positive person there—everyone else was cold. The owner also walked in and didn’t acknowledge me or the other new hire- the only time he interacted with me was when he was standing next to the office manager while I tried to explain my concerns while both simultaneously kept cutting me off and criticized me for prioritizing Starbucks, even though the manager had a cup herself. LAUGHABLE. It was clear to me the whole situation needed a lot of prayer especially the office manager, which I said to her. Employers need to realize that their treatment of employees often contributes to high turnover and poor morale.
It seems the employer’s main issue is a combination of high stress, poor communication, and lack of empathy. The office manager appears overwhelmed by the workload and staffing shortage, which has made her defensive and quick to react negatively, even to small issues like a two-minute lateness. There also seems to be an absence of understanding or flexibility, particularly in terms of expectations for breaks or personal needs, which creates an unwelcoming atmosphere. The lack of proper training and support adds to the frustration, leaving employees feeling undervalued and unsupported. Overall, I believe the environment is rigid, reactionary, and lacks the compassion needed to foster a positive, productive workplace.
