Job Brief

As a Youth Services Librarian, you will play a pivotal role in fostering a love for reading and learning among young patrons. Your primary responsibilities will include administering and maintaining a collection of youth-oriented library materials, developing engaging programs, and providing exceptional reference and instructional services. The ideal candidate will possess strong communication skills, experience working with children and teens, and a passion for promoting literacy and information access in a variety of settings such as public libraries, schools, and community organizations.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement innovative programming and outreach activities tailored to children and teens.
  • Manage the acquisition, cataloging, and circulation of youth-focused library materials including books, e-books, and multimedia.
  • Provide reference and research assistance to young library users, helping them locate and use information effectively.
  • Organize and conduct educational workshops and storytime sessions that promote literacy and information literacy skills.
  • Collaborate with educators, parents, and community organizations to enhance library services and resources for youth.
  • Maintain a welcoming and engaging environment in the youth services area of the library.
  • Utilize library management software and technology to streamline operations and enhance user experience.
  • Evaluate and select age-appropriate materials and resources based on community needs and trends in youth literature.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Library and Information Science (MLIS) from an ALA-accredited institution.
  • Experience working in a library setting, preferably in youth services.
  • Strong understanding of child and adolescent development and reading promotion techniques.
  • Proficiency in library management systems and digital information resources.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage diverse audiences.
  • Creative problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Familiarity with current trends in youth literature and educational programming.
  • Ability to plan and execute programs and events for various age groups.
